All About the Claireperk x Standard Wax Collab

Dreams. Come. True.

This summer, right after I launched Claireperk.com, one of my funnest friends posted some Instagram posts telling her friends about my new biz, and sharing photos of some of my previous projects (Dove, you are the best!). Her friend Samantha Thompson, owner of Standard Wax, asked if I’d do a candle with her as a part of her artist series. I was only just beginning on my own, and my dream collab had somehow materialized!

I tried and scrapped dozens of options over the course of 2 or so months, before I landed on the apothecary, Chicago Field Museum, Marie Antoinette-inspired witch vibes you see below on this mood board. The goal was something rich and ever-so-slightly creepy-feeling for fall, but pretty enough to keep out through the winter, and beyond.

Collage is one of my favorite types of projects - it allows you to pull images together from all corners of the world and internet to create something new and exciting. For this project, I used photos of curiosities from vintage botanical libraries, my favorite creepy typefaces from Oh No and Lian Types and beautiful 18th century art of my favorite headless, sugar-loving princess Marie Antoinette.

While I typically create ultra-femmey designs (I finally stopped resisting it!), this time I tried to keep things a little more chill, because Standard Wax is generally a little more neutral color-wise, and I didn’t want to alienate her usual clientele with aggressive pink or ribbon or macarons.

I created about 20 different options for labels to start, all formatted in wreaths of florals and little shapes, and she gave me the green light to make a mini collection of 4! I couldn’t’ decide between “Go Away”, “Home Creep Home” and “Leave Me Alone, Thank You”, but after asking a few friends, Go Away was the clear favorite. (Fun fact: So far, it’s been the best seller!). We decided the monogram would be a fun, custom option to offer –I personalize each one–and I created the specimen and Marie Antoinette designs to round out the collection with simpler-feeling designs, so as not to be too overwhelming.
